Isabelle Stengers focust in haar diepzinnige wetenschapstheoretische reflectie allereerst op de theoretische en experimentele natuurwetenschappen en vervolgens op de humane wetenschappen, en maakt de maatschappelijke en politieke implicaties ervan duidelijk. Stengers wijst er namelijk op dat de wetenschappen op een ondemocratische wijze als strategische elementen worden gebruikt door moderne machten : over anderen wordt beslist zonder hun inspraak en zonder rekening te houden met hun ervaring. Stengers kant zich tegen dit abusieve gebruik van de wetenschap en pleit voor een verruimd weten, een 'scientia' waarin de betrokkenen - de burgers - medezeggenschap hebben. Gilbert Hottois legt zijn filosofische vooronderstellingen bloot ten aanzien van de wetenschap en in het bijzonder ten aanzien van de techno-wetenschap. Hij begrijpt de mens in de eerste plaats als een poiètisch wezen, dit wil zeggen als een handelend wezen dat de natuur probeert te begrijpen om er op in te werken. Deze ingreep strekt zich momenteel dankzij de meest recente wetenschappelijke ontdekkingen en technieken uit tot de mens zelf. Hottois plaatst zich in de prometheïsche traditie, ingeluid door Francis Bacon: door de techno-wetenschappelijke vooruitgang zal de mens, ook in de verre toekomst, kunnen zorgen voor zijn instandhouding en zijn welzijn. De auteurs nemen ieder een eigen vrijzinnige positie in.

L'attrait de l'inconnu semble avoir cédé le pas devant la peur de l'incertain. Désormais, le discours des bio-catastrophistes domine le monde. Le procès de la technique est ouvert pour s'être emparée de la vie. Montrés du doigt, médecins et chercheurs menaceraient la nature humaine elle-même en bouleversant la procréation, la sexualité, l'alimentation, le vieillissement, la mort... Bref, l'humanité serait appelée à disparaître. Le fantôme d'un bébé cloné a mobilisé toutes les peurs de la planète : " crime contre l'humanité ", " contre l'espèce humaine " ou au contraire puissante incitation à faire preuve d'inventivité normative ? L'embryon humain est-il sacré ? Allons-nous abolir les dispositions légales favorables à l'avortement ? Saurons-nous repenser nos modes de vie et nos institutions modernes passablement délabrées ? Annoncée naguère par les techno-prophètes comme surhumanité, la post-humanité est aujourd'hui dépeinte sous les traits de l'inhumanité même. Mais l'éthique ne saurait se borner à formuler des interdictions. Elle a vocation à explorer et affiner de nouveaux modes d'être. Cela relève de la responsabilité de tous.
